Stephen William Hawking was born January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England to parents Jane Beryl Wilde Hawking Jones. Stephen was the first of his parent's four children. Hawking, who had battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for over 50 years died in Cambridge, England, on 14 March 2018. He was proceeded in death by brother Edward Hawking. He is survived by daughter Catherine Lucy Hawking Sons Robert Hawking, Timothy Hawking Sisters Philippa and Mary. On Friday 15th June 2018, the ashes of Stephen Hawking were interred at Westminster Abbey, London England. His ashes were laid to rest between Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Charles Darwin.
Stephen Hawking's parents both attended University College at Oxford England. Hawking's father, Dr. Frank Hawking was a well-known tropical medicine researcher. In 1952, the younger Hawking followed in his father's footsteps entering University College, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford Stephen Hawking earned his PHD from the University of Cambridge (England).
In 1963, just shy of Hawking's 21st birthday, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
By the late 1960s, he was using a wheelchair to move around and was having trouble writing. As his disease progressed his speech began to deteriorate then in 1985, an emergency tracheotomy caused his total loss of speech.
Not deterred by his physical limitations Professor Stephen Hawking continued theorizing the basic laws which govern the universe. His research attempted to define laws on which black holes are formed, exists and disappear.
Hawking was awarded a 'Commander of the Order of the British Empire' by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1982.
